Enrollment Overview

We accept students from all backgrounds without regard to previous academic performance including grades, test scores, or attendance records. Students are accepted based on a lottery system and only need to fill out an application to apply. Acceptance is subject to program capacity and when there are more applications than seats available, your child will be placed on a waiting list for future openings.

What You'll Need...

If your child is selected in the lottery, you will receive an acceptance packet that must be turned in in its entirety by the given deadline to secure your child's slot. Please note that you must submit this paperwork to complete the enrollment process.

The following guidelines will help make your application quick and easy. Start by collecting your child's information, as noted below:

  • Proof of residency (click here for form)
  • Your child’s birth certificate or passport
  • Child's immunization records (must be up-to-date)
  • Child's physical form completed by doctor (click here for form)
  • Child's latest report card/transcript
  • Child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and/or 504 Accommodation Plan (if applicable and available)
  • At the time of enrollment, we require a student report card to demonstrate successful completion of their previous grade.

Prepare these documents for upload before starting your application. Applications will not be processed until the school receives all required student documents.

Enrollment FAQs

  • How do I apply to Opportunity Charter School?

    The application process is quick and easy. Begin by creating an account. Then, complete the step-by-step application. Submit the required student information online or by mail. You will be notified whether your application has been accepted.

  • How does a lottery system work?

    Students only need to fill out an application to apply. Each applicant is only allowed one ticket for the lottery. During the lottery, student names are drawn one at a time and listed in the order they are pulled. After the lottery is complete, OCS informs families by phone or email. If your child is not selected in the lottery, they will be placed on a waiting list for future openings. 

  • Does my child get a preference if their sibling attends the school?

    Yes. OCS gives enrollment preference to students with siblings currently enrolled and/or living in Community School District 3.

  • How do I know if I qualify to apply and attend Opportunity Charter School?

    Opportunity Charter School is a free public charter school open to all eligible candidates, subject to space and staff availability. No applicant shall, on the basis of income level, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, or disability, be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination from the school.


    Students residing in the New York City area qualify to attend OCS. Students who live in Community School District 3 will receive enrollment preference.

  • How long does it take for application review and approval?

    Once your application is completed and all required student documents have been submitted, applications are reviewed by the enrollment team for accuracy and completeness. You will be notified of acceptance or waitlisting by phone or email after the lottery is conducted.

  • Are there any costs to apply to Opportunity Charter School?

    Because we believe in removing barriers to quality education, we provide all our instruction and education at no cost to the students and families. 

  • Is there a uniform or dress code?

    Opportunity Charter School is a uniform school. Students should wear their uniforms with pride to represent OCS and respect its ability to prepare them to be productive citizens. 

  • What is SchoolMint?

    SchoolMint is an online enrollment and communication platform that works with public, charter, and private schools to make the enrollment process for parents easier and faster.


    SchoolMint offers different options, so parents can apply and register with a computer or mobile device. They can upload student documents, check application status, and even select the method in which you prefer to receive your school’s communications, by email or text.


    OCS utilizes this enrollment software to ensure security and timely response to your student’s acceptance.
